"Stanley" is the brainchild of the Volkswagen Group Research's Electronic Research Laboratory and Stanford University, both based in Palo Alto, California. The "intelligent" four-wheel drive is the winner of the American DARPA Grand Challenge 2005 - staged by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). "Stanley" beat all odds to triumph at the world's most technically demanding car race - a 220 kilometre previously undisclosed course in the Mojave Desert.
Stanley is a 2004 Volkswagen Touareg fitted with the latest state-of-the-art technologies. Car drivers will experience a new dimension of mobility through innovative driver assistance systems. This is not about making the driver redundant but providing additional comfort, navigation and safety on the roads of the future. Some of the technological marvels used in Stanley have now been incorporated into Volkswagen car models.
