Volkswagen is presenting a further highlight of its exemplary product offensive in the top segment with the design study of the W12 Coupé. The six-litre W12 with 440kw has been integrated as a mid-mounted engine into the new concept sports car weighing only 1 200 kilograms. In October 2001 a prototype, in the final stages of development, set the world speed record for distance covered in "24 hours". It covered 7 085.7 kilometres (4 402.8 miles) at an average speed of 295.24 km/h (183.45 mph). It thus toppled the previous record by a margin of twelve km/h (7.5 mph).
